The Bowie & Dick test monitors the effectiveness of air removal in vacuum steam sterilizers. Designed for cycles of 3.5 minutes at 134°C and 4.0 minutes at 132°C.
The Bowie & Dick Test Card should be used daily, generally after a new sterilizer has been installed or after relocations of autoclaves , after malfunctions, sterilization process failures and any major repairs to sterilizers.

The Bowie & Dick Test Card is a class 2 chemical indicator printed on a cardboard backing (89 mm x 48 mm). Information about the sterilization cycle (date, time, etc) can be recorded on the back of the indicator, thus allowing a permanent record of the process.
After the sterilization process the chemical changes of the indicator are: from VIOLET COLOR to GREEN. A heterogeneous color change, i.e. the presence of purple color, indicates the presence of an air pocket during the sterilization cycle indicating a defect in the process.

The Bowie & Dick Test Card should be used daily, before the first sterilization cycle of the first pregnancy. A shortened cycle (i.e., a cycle omitting the post vacuum drying phase) should be run to properly warm the sterilizer.

Deposit
Bowie & Dick Card is stored in a place away from light at temperatures between 10 -30°C, 30-80%.
Dispose of with waste paper after use.
