Human chorionic gonadotropin (hcg) is the glycoprotein that is secreted by the placenta after insemination. HCG can be detected in human urine (and also in blood or serum) at least 5 - 15 days after pregnancy has started. The level of hcg in the urine after the first missed period is generally about 100 miu/ml, and in the first three months hcg levels increase and reach 100,000 - 200,000 miu/ml. The easy detection of hcg in urine and serum immediately after insemination and the rapid rise in levels in the early stages of pregnancy make this hormone a reliable and good screening material for early diagnosis of pregnancy. The aim of this test is to detect early development of beta hcg exceeding 20 miu/mL.
